AP: Germplasm will be collected as seed and soil free whole plants. When appropriate, the accessions will be documented with voucher herbarium specimens. All collections will be documented with complete "passport" data. All germplasm will be hand carried in to the U.S. and then shipped to the appropriate Germplasm Quarantine facility from which it will be distributed according to policies in effect at time of receipt. PR: 9209 TO 9212 A plant exploration to Far Eastern Russia and Sakhalin Island took place from July 12 - August 2, 1992. Dr. Thomas Lumpkin of Washington State University was the principal explorer. Sixteen genera of plants were collected, represented by Actinidia, Astragalus, Bergenia, Fragaria, Glycine, Lens, Lonicera, Mentha, Peonia, Prunus, Ribes, Rubus, Schizandra, Vaccinium, Virburnum and wild Wasabia tenuis. Much germplasm was exchanged including all of the Glycine soja accessions held by VIR in Vladivostok which are not currently held by the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System. It was determined that assimilation of ethnic minorities into Russian culture has led to the subsequent loss of their traditional crops. Planning is underway for the second part of this project which will include exploration in Japan for germplasm of Wasabia spp. All collected germplasm will be available to plant breeders to use in developing improved cultivars.
