In 1987, the city installed a 2.9 MW hydroelectric facility at its Betasso Water Treatment Facility in the foothills above town at a location where pressure was previously relieved in the water line. The facility consists of an impulse-type Pelton turbine and a synchronous generator. On average, the facility generates about 17 million kWh per year.
