Statement of U.S. Ambassador Gillian Milovanovic about today’s incidents in Parliament

Today’s shocking incidents of violence, threats and intimidation in Macedonia’s Assembly are a disgraceful betrayal of the democratic process.  We expect that appropriate measures will be taken in the Assembly and in the legal system to hold to account all those responsible.  Violence, threats, and intimidation have no place in parliament or in the democratic process.

Reports that the media were prevented from carrying out their role in covering today’s incidents are also very disturbing.  Protection of the media’s ability to gather information and inform the public is essential in any democracy.
