Summary (Summary adapted from the Species 2000 web site)
Species 2000 has the objective of enumerating all known species of plants, animals, fungi and microbes on Earth as the baseline dataset for studies of global biodiversity. It will also provide a simple access point enabling users to link from it's web site to other data systems for all groups of organisms, ... using direct species-links. A prototype on-line version of the Annual Checklist is available, with 4 contributing databases, covering 176,508 species, 96,556 synonyms, 90,865 common names, and 14,999 references.
Users worldwide will be able to verify the scientific name, status and classification of any known species via the Species Locator, which provides access to species checklist data drawn from an array of participating databases. Some of the taxonomic groups being addressed by the organisations starting the Species 2000 programme are as follows: Viruses, Bacteria, Corals, Molluscs, Crustacea, Diptera, Ichneumon Wasps, Moths & Butterflies, Curculionid Beetles, Fishes, Birds, Mammals, Fungi, Cacti, Palms, Legumes, Umbellifers and Fossil Plants.
