Field Expeditions

Field Trip Name: FMARS Long Duration Mission
Start Date: 04/25/2007 End Date: 08/28/2007
Continent: North America Country: Canada
State/Province: Nunavut Nearest City/Town: Resolute
Latitude: 75deg22min N Longitude: 89deg41min E
Name of site(cave, mine, e.g.): Haughton Crater Keywords: Mars, exploration, simulation, analogue
Description of Work: The FMARS Long Duration Mission is an unprecedented Mars exploration simulation in the Mars analogue environment of the Canadian High Arctic. Six crewmembers spent four months under strict simulation conditions (limited water use, constrained diet, high-latency communications, no outside activity without simulated life-support equipment, etc.) conducting field research in and around Haughton Crater, a 39 million year old impact structure. There were three categories of research carried out: human factors research, examining the effects of the simulation conditions on crew psychology and performance, and the effectiveness of counter-measures; mission operations research, analyzing resource usage under realistic simulation conditions; and the field research itself, which focused on the winter to summer seasonal transition and its effects on biological activity in the active layer above the permafrost.

Spitzer The “Molecular Clouds to Disks (C2D)” Legacy program mapped a large number of starless and quiescent molecular clouds using the Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) on Spitzer covering 5-24 microns. This project is a follow up study of a subset of the C2D using ground-based telescopes on Mauna Kea (Keck and Gemini) to obtain 3-5micron spectra for the same lines of sight.

Field Expeditions

Field Trip Name: Keck Telescope Observing run on Mauna Kea
Start Date: August 11 2006 End Date: August 13 2006
Continent: North America Country: USA
State/Province: Hawaii Nearest City/Town: Kamuela
Latitude: 19:49.7 Longitude: 155:28.7
Name of site(cave, mine, e.g.): Mauna Kea, keck Observatory Keywords: Keck, NIRI
Description of Work: This project used the Keck Telescope on Mauna Kea, and we remotely operated the telescope from Kamuela. KECK-NIRSPEC (near-infrared spectrometer) was essential for this project due to the faintness of the targets and the need for high sensitivity, moderate spectral resolution. NIRSPEC's wide KL filter is well-suited to studies of the 3micron water ice absorption band. The sample of sources to be studied have L band visual magnitudes from 10-to-12.5, spanning a range of visual extinctions of 3-to-40mag.
