Description/Abstract Progress is reported in studies on the circulation of nutnient elements in the Sargasso Sea. Methods are described for the determination of dissolved organic C in sea water and for the determination of particulate C. Data are included from studies on the composition of particulate organic matter in the Western Atlantic Ocean; cyclic diurnal variations in the uptake of ammonia and nitrate by photosynthetic organisms in the Sargasso Sea; diurnal variation of ammonia concentration in the upper 500 m of water of the Sargasso Sea; the chemical composition and carbohydrate content of zooplankton in the Sargasso Sea; and seasonal distributions of euthecosomatous pteropods in surface plankton in the western North Atiantic Ocean.
