UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) Met/Ocean Data Set (1973-1988) Comprising Wave, Current and Sea Surface Meteorological Data
Entry ID:
BODC_UKOOA_MetOcean
Summary This Met/Ocean data bank comprises wind, wave, current and surface meteorology data collected by the UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) at 11 off-shore sites on the UK continental shelf. The data set includes data from 3 UKOOA Weatherships (W.S.) operating between 1973 and 1977, and from the National Data Buoy DB/1 and its successors DB/2 and DB/3 ... between 1978 and 1988. The UKOOA measurement sites are at the following locations:

W.S. Boyle, W.S. Fitzroy and W.S. Stevenson: Available for each site are 3 hourly wave data (short term statistics) and hourly wind observations together with atmospheric pressure, air temperature and, occasionally, sea surface temperature. Moored current meter measurements were made at 2 to 4 depths at each site.
Beryl/Frigg, Brent, Forties and Foula: Available for each site are 3 hourly wave data (short term statistics) and hourly wind observations together with atmospheric pressure, air temperature and occasionally sea surface temperature.
DB/1: At the DB/1 site the following measurements were made: 3-hourly directional spectra of the wave field derived from measurements of heave, pitch and roll of the buoy, sea temperature, air temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity and wind speed and direction. Surface currents were measured hourly using an acoustic current meter.
DB/2 and DB/3: Available for each site are Met/Ocean data and directional wave spectra. The Met/Ocean data comprise hourly recordings of wind speed and direction, maximum wind gust speed, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure (and pressure trend over three hours), sea temperature, significant wave height and period, maximum wave height, swell wave height, period and direction, wind wave height and period, current speed and direction (on the hour and half hour). The directional wave spectra consist of the 9 co- and quad- spectral densities for 51 frequency slots, plus the derived height and period of all waves, height, period and direction and directional spread of swell and wind waves, period of peak spectral energy, and check ratio at the peak frequency.
