CTIP Project: Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album

Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Lands Highway Division is pleased to present the Roadway Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album (RATPA). It is a continuation of the work started in the CD based 2001 Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album. This photo album presents photographs, selected detail drawings, descriptions, and costs, for innovative context sensitive aesthetic roadway treatments. The material for this album comes from submittals by transportation professionals from across the United States. The Roadway Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album is divided in to the following aesthetic categories:

  • Retaining Walls
  • Bridges
  • Fences
  • Barriers
  • Bio Engineering
  • Slope Treatments
  • Pavements

The Pavements category is new and offers product descriptions, advantages and limitations in an integrated pictorial analysis of asphalt, concrete, unit pavers, recycled alternatives, and stabilized and unstablized surfaces. The Roadway Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album is a major benefit to transportation agencies and their consultant designers. It provides a multi-faceted reference for highway designers, landscape architects, bridge and geotechnical engineers, and others. It should be particularly beneficial when considering preliminary design alternatives and to illustrate a concept to owner, permitting agencies, and citizen groups at public hearings. It is located on the web at http://gallery.company39.com/FLH/gallery/.

Living Document

Our goal is to update the Roadway Aesthetic Treatments Photo Album with imaginative and creative designs that provide forefront techniques and resources to transportation agencies and designers. With the addition of the web driven database, uploading current projects in a timely manner is now available. A second goal of the RATPA is to provide additional features such as a compilation of wall finishes and supplementary information of techniques used. The photo album is a collaboration of all who has an interest in bringing forth new technology to the engineering realm. Electronic submittal forms will be available.
