Seals and Lubricants

A wide variety of seals and lubricants were flown on LDEF. Analysis of such materials was, in general, not part of the Principal Investigators' original objectives, but became of interest due to the extended duration of the LDEF mission. In general, most seals and lubricants functioned as required, although some damage to the Experiment Exposure Control Canister (EECC) seals on the leading edge (Rows 8 and 9) was observed. In addition, cetyl alcohol, which was used as a lubricant on numerous bolts, had essentially evaporated by the end of the mission and many of these bolts seized upon attempted removal.

The following reports provide details of the investigations on LDEF seals and lubricants.
