Species: Udinia farquharsoni   (Newstead) - Catalog

Common name: No common name

Field Characters: Newstead (1922) described the older adult females as hemispherical or narrowly oval and highly convex; margin very thick, forming a distinct, round molding or bead. Color rich, dark castaneous; immature examples dusky buff. Young adults are described more or less flat and dusky buff or pale ochreous. Without wax on dorsum; without an ovisac. Occurring on stems and fruit.

Validation characters - Diagnosis: Marginal setae usually slightly fimbriate; anal plates with anterior margin longer than posterior margin located in middle of abdomen or toward hind legs; anal plates with conspicuous discal seta with fimbriate apex and 4 or more apical setae. Other characters: Tibio-tarsus slightly articulated, with tibio-tarsal sclerosis; ventral submarginal tubular ducts with narrow filament; derm with areolations in older females; dorsal tubular ducts absent; dorsal setae with acute or slightly rounded apices, slightly enlarged; without submarginal tubercles; with 3 subapical setae on each plate; anal fold with more than 6 fringe setae; ventral tubular ducts restricted to submarginal areas; multilocular pores with 10 locular pores; multiloculars present in vulvar area only; multilocular pores when present anterior of anterior spiracle predominantly with 5 loculi, about same size as pores laterad of anterior spiracle; claw without denticle; claw digitules equal; 3 pairs of prevulvar setae (posterior pair often obscured by anal plates); stigmatic setae differentiated from other marginal setae, middle seta longer than lateral setae; antennae usually 8-segmented; preopercular pores conspicuous, restricted to area anterior of anal plates.

Comparison: Udinia farquharsoni is similar to U. catori by having a disc seta on anal plates, anal plates with anterior margin longer than posterior margin, and areolate derm. Udinia farquharsoni differs by having short dorsal setae, less than 20 µ (U. catori has long dorsal setae, longer than 25 µ), marginal setae predominantly with fimbriate apices on most but not all specimens (U. catori has predominantly simple marginal setae), and discal seta with fimbriate apex (U. catori has discal seta with acute apex).

U.S. quarantine notes: Between 1995 and 2005, this species was intercepted at U. S. ports-of-entry 2 times. We have examined specimens taken in quarantine from Congo (Cola); Morocco (Mangifera); Nigeria (Theobroma, unknown fruit). We have not examined specimens for the following interception records in the APHIS database Guinea (Mangifera); Nigeria (Mangifera). ScaleNet lists hosts in 17 plant families and includes only Afrotropical records including Benin, Cameroon; Central African Republic; Côte d'Ivoire; Gabon; Ghana; Kenya; Nigeria; Senegal; Sierra Leone; Tanzania; Zaire. One other species of Udinia has been taken in quarantine in addition to U. catori and U. farquharsoni, i.e., U. pattersoni Hanford (Cameroon, Coffea).
