Marsilio Cassotti and His Bride Faustina, 1523
oil on canvas
Museo del Prado, Madrid

Marsilio Cassotti, the son of a cloth merchant, is about to slip a ring on the finger of his bride. The painting documents their marriage, which was not yet a standardized ceremony. Rather than look at each other, both partners make the viewer a witness to their wedding. Above, Cupid humorously places the yoke of responsibility on their shoulders.
