Filmmaker Eran Riklis Discusses "The Syrian Bride"
Award-winning Israeli filmmaker Eran Riklis will discuss his newest film, "The Syrian Bride," at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Mary Pickford Theater on the third floor of the Library’s James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.
The event, which is sponsored by the Library’s Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division and the Hebrew Language Table in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel, is the first in the Library’s Israeli film series. It is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.
"The Syrian Bride" is the story of an Israeli bride who leaves her village in the Golan Heights to marry a Syrian television star she has never met. Once she crosses the border into Syria, she can never return to her home.
Eran Riklis has been creating films since 1975. After graduating from the National Film School in Beaconsfield, England, he produced his first feature film, a political thriller based on a true story titled "On a Clear Day You Can See Damascus." This was followed by several other award-winning films including "Cup Final" (1992), an antiwar comedy about an Israeli soldier and his Palestinian captor who share a love of soccer; "Zohar"(1993), a biopic about controversial Sephardic singer Zohar Argov; and "Volcano Junction" (1999), a tribute to rock and roll.
The Embassy of Israel will soon present the Library with moving-image material to complement more than 100 items in the Library’s Embassy of Israel collection. Presented to the Library in 1997 by Ambassador Eliahu Ben-Elissar, the collection is made possible under the terms of a Feb. 19, 1950, agreement between the United States and Israel (Treaties and Other International Acts Series 2169), under which the official publications of Israeli government agencies are made available through the Library of Congress.
