Parens  #0647

  photo of Parens

Parens was born in 1987.  He is the third of six known calves of Sod (See Sod's Family tree).  He is also the best known and most often seen of the Sod family.  He is very lucky to have survived his first year.

1987 was a year of horrible tragedies.  During that year there was a crash in the sand lance fish stock.  This is the preferred diet of the humpback whale in this area.  Towards the end of the season the whales started feeding on mackerel.  Unfortunately, it is believed that the mackerel had been feeding on a red tide type organism called Saxitoxin.  More that a dozen humpback whales washed ashore including Beltane (1980 calf of Silver and mother of Cats Eyes), K (1985 calf of Rune), Talon (1981 calf of Sinestra and a first time mother in that year), Windmill (1986 calf of Janus) and many others.  It is unknown exactly how many whales actually died that year.  Many of the bodies may have washed out to sea.  There are a number of whales that have not been seen since including Rush (Talon's one and only calf).

Parens, however, did survive and has done very well for himself.  He is a large, healthy, young male in the prime of his life.

Parens is short for parentheses (the black markings on his left fluke resemble that form of punctuation mark).
