Current Primary Research Interests:

  • For the past 35 years, I have been involved in the physical sciences and scientific laboratories, from the high school level to national research. For the last 25+ years, I have maintained and operated mass spectrometers, but I have also been involved in the setting up of more conventional chemical laboratories. I also have considerable experience in the fields of laboratory computers, based on university courses and actual use of computers for the control/acquisition/data processing stages of mass spectrometry. This computer experience encompasses the scope from mainframe to personal computers.
  • In my present employment (23 yrs), I function as a service mass spectrometrist in a multi-instrument laboratory consisting of seven mass spectrometers for LCMS, GCMS, MS/MS, pyrolysis MS and LD/TOF MS. I have responsibility for the acquisition of new instruments, operation, repair, and modification of present equipment; and the training of new employees, as well as the analysis of samples submitted for identification and/or purity estimates. My achievements have earned me promotions to my present grade of GS-14 (1992) and awards such as the FDA Commendable Service Award (1987) and an NCTR Outstanding Government Employee Award (2000).
  • In conjunction with researchers, both at work and from nearby universities, I have performed mass spectral analyses that resulted in numerous publications. I have also presented original research at the annual American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) meetings. My broad background and technical experience have allowed me to function as a technical consultant not only at the work site, but also for Federal, State and Academic laboratories in this region.
