After studying at the Academy of the Fine Arts, Bologna, Giorgio Morandi (Italian, 1890—1964) explored a number of genres over the course of an exceptionally long and prolific career, during which he produced some seventeen hundred paintings. Among Morandi’s most treasured paintings are the exquisitely subtle still lifes he created later in life. Focusing on a group of basic forms, Morandi found rich compositional and tonal variation in treatments of familiar objects, such as bottles, boxes, and cylinders in the two paintings reproduced here. Both works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
