Description/Abstract It is proposed that the state of stress in rock be measured by first drilling a hole of unit radius in which a deformation gauge is installed to measure radial displacements of the periphery of the hole.^A second hole of larger radius is then drilled a short distance away but parallel to the first.^As a result, the stress field around the first hole will alter and deformations can be measured.^Treating this as a plane problem in elasticity, a theory developed in the paper may be used to determine the magnitudes and directions of the two principal stresses, assumed to lie in a plane normal to the hole axes.^Errors in the value of modulus of elasticity used have a significant influence on the accuracy of the method.
