Texas Nun Selected for Census Bureau's
Advisory Committee on the Hispanic Population

Texas resident, Sister Maria Gonzalez, president of the Mexican American
Cultural Center in San Antonio, has been selected to sit on the Census
Bureau's Advisory Committee on the Hispanic Population.

"I am very pleased and honored to be appointed to the committee," Sister
Maria said. "I know how important an accurate census count is to our
community and I plan to work hand in hand with the Census Bureau to
achieve this goal."

The committee, along with the advisory committees on African American,
American Indian and Alaska Native, and Asian and Pacific Islander
populations, was established in 1995. The primary focus of the four
committees is to advise the Census Bureau on its efforts to achieve an
accurate count among the various racial and ethnic groups.

The four committees are composed of persons from the public at large and
representatives of national, regional and local organizations. Members of
the committees are academicians, community leaders, policy planners,
educators, members of religious organizations and private- sector data
users who want to ensure an accurate count for Census 2000.
