The Phoenix Area Dental Program is responsible for coordinating oral health care for Native
Americans in portions of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Dental services are provided in IHS
Direct facilities, tribal facilities and one urban clinic (Phoenix). Phoenix Indian Medical
Center (PIMC) is the referral center for oral health in the Phoenix Area. PIMC has two
pediatric dentists, one periodontist and one oral surgeon. In addition, full-time pediatric
dentists are assigned to the Parker hospital and the Whiteriver hospital.
Current research and health findings have reinforced the principal that “oral health is an
integral part of overall general health”. In all of the Phoenix Area dental clinics, the
dental staff work closely with all segments of the health care team. Because of the high rate
of dental disease across the Phoenix Area, most IHS and tribal clinics limit their scope of
practice to emergency, preventive and routine restorative care.
Numerous opportunities exist across the Phoenix Area IHS for dental health professionals
(dentists, hygienists and dental assistants). For information on current vacancies, please
feel free to contact the Area Dental Consultant, Dr. Dan Huber at (602) 364-5190. For
information regarding employment opportunities in the dental program outside Phoenix Area
please contact Dr. Tim Lozon at (800) IHS-DENT (1-800-447-3368) or visit the online
vacancy listing.
