Menard-Hodges Site

Nady, Arkansas
County of Arkansas.
National Register Number: 85003542
Resource type: Site.
Property type: Domestic - village site (pueblo group). The threat level was Watch in
2006.
Congressional District: AR-1 Certified Local Government: NO

Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 11, 1989):
First described in 1819, this site is identified as the Quapaw village of Osotouy, where French explorer Henri de Tonty established a trading post in 1686. The late prehistoric, protohistoric, and historic site consists of two large mounds and several house mounds.

Condition:
The landmark is currently under Watch status.

Although site conditions at Menard-Hodges are generally good, vehicular traffic on a farm road crossing the site contributes to erosion at the edge of Mound D and in the village midden/cemetery area near Mound C. Park management at Arkansas Post National Memorial is currently exploring ways to remedy the situation and has installed a locked gate to restrict motor traffic. In recent years there have been occasional looting incidents reported. The site now has limited access and is regularly patrolled.
