Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 19, 1994):
As the type site for the Pensacola culture of the Mississippian Period on the northern Gulf Coast, Bottle Creek Site is a key to understanding the history and culture of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta in late prehistoric/protohistoric times. The site is believed to have had its pricipal occupation between AD 1250 and 1550, and have served as the focal point for interaction with other Mississippian culture areas along the coast and the interior of the Southeast. It appears to have functioned as a social, political, religious, and trade center for the Mobile Delta region and the central Gulf coast.
