ENERGY AND WATER APPROPRIATIONS BILL CLEARS HOUSE

Number of Alaska projects included

Washington, D.C. - Alaska Congressman Don Young voted yesterday in support of H.R. 2203, the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, which contained a number of Alaska projects.

Included in the bill, specifically requested by Congressman Don Young, authorized and directed the Corps of Engineers to dredge a navigational channel in the Chena River at Fairbanks, from its confluence with the Tanana River upstream to the University Road Bridge that will allow the safe passage during normal water levels of a vessel up to 350 feet in length, 60 feet in width and drafting up to three feet.

Another of Young's requests, requiring the Corps of Engineers to begin the implementation of an administrative appeals process, was also included in the bill.

The bill passed by a vote of 404-17. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Other Alaska related items included in the bill were:
Allowing the Corps to use money in the revolving fund for a 17,000 sq.ft. addition to the Corps Alaska District's main office building on Elmendorf Air Force Base.
Authorization directed to provide planning, design and construction assistance to non-federal interests in carrying out water related environmental infrastructure and environmental resources development projects in Alaska. $5,000,000
Alaska Power Administration General and to replace a damaged transmission cable $3,500,000
For the Swan Lake-Lake Tyee Intertie Project. $10,000,000
Department of Energy to assist DOE in developing innovative rural Alaskan energy technology. $3,000,000
