Habitat Restoration
Beaver Springs/Chena Slough at the Doughchee Road
Fish Passage Project completed in August 2003
This
Partners for Fish and Wildlife project is located at Doughchee Road
near North Pole south of Fairbanks, Alaska. The orignial culvert that
was placed under the road steepened as the road settled over Beaver
Springs Creek. This crushed culvert moved water at such a steep angle
that fish could not move upstream. Beaver Springs Creek habitat affects
the downstream environment of Chena Slough and the Chena River, both
anadromous fish streams. Resident
and anadromous fish, including chinook and chum salmon, Arctic grayling,
northern pike, burbot, whitefish, long-nose sucker, and sculpin use
the Chena Slough and River downstream of the proposed project.
Using funds from The Partners for Fish and Wildlife program, a new
bridge was installed to allow for fish passage.
