SAFE Port Passes the House, 421-2

Coauthor, Congressman Dan Lungren: SAFE Port increases the security of our sea ports and makes the American people safer”

(Washington D.C.)- In response to passage of H.R. 4954, the Security and Accountability For Every Port (SAFE Port) Act in the House of Representatives, Coauthor of the bill, Congressman Dan Lungren (CA-03), released the following statement.

SAFE Port increases the security of our sea ports and makes the American people safer.  This is comprehensive legislation that addresses dangerous vulnerabilities at our national ports and creates a strategic layered defense to guard against attack.  The silver lining of the Dubai controversy was the sense of urgency injected into the issue of U.S. sea port security.  I applaud members of both parties in the Congress for seizing this opportunity to protect American lives and the American economy.

Congresswoman Jane Harman and I began work on this legislation with the goal of enacting a law that would support existing port security programs, create a layered defense system, and develop an economic recovery strategy in the event of an attack on an American sea port.  Today’s overwhelming passage of SAFE Port by the House is another step toward achieving that important goal.  This is the rarest type of legislation.  A bipartisan bill introduced to make a law, rather than a political statement.  The near unanimous approval of this comprehensive port security legislation today is a result of that bipartisan effort.

The H.R. 4954, the Security and Accountability For Every Port (SAFE Port) Act has more than 80 cosponsors and was unanimously approved by both the House Homeland Security Committee and the Subcommittee on Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection and Cybersecurity.
