Dear Class3 Error Recipient:

Enclosed with this letter you will find ANSYS Class3 Error Reports

96-01, 96-02, 96-03 and ANSYS QA Notice QA96-01. For your convenience,

Class3 Error Report Summaries have been created for Rev. 5.1 and Rev.

5.2 and are also enclosed. These summaries are sorted by Class3 Error

Number and also by keyword.

Throughout 1995 you should have received Class3 Error Reports 95-01

up to and including 95-63. ANSYS QA Notices QA95-01 through QA95-10 were

also issued throughout the year. There was a need to revise some reports

this year and the following reports were also released: 93-105 R1, 94-41

R1, 94-52 R1, 94-68 R1, 94-01 R1, 95-10 R1, 95-07 R1, 95-21 R1 and 95-13

R1.

If you are missing any of the above referenced reports please notify

Bonny Podolek at 412-873-2858 and the missing reports will be supplied to

You. Please take a moment also to review the ASC name and address that

the reports are being sent to. If any changes should be incorporated

into the address, please fill out the form attached to this letter and

return it so that we can update our records.

I would like to remind you that Class3 Error Reports and the Class3

Error Summaries are also available in ascii format via Internet.

like to be added to the distribution list to receive reports in this

fashion, simply send an email to bpodolek@ansys.com and include your

email address, your name, company name and ANSYS license number. Reports

sent via Internet do not replace the hard copy reports. The hard copy

reports are still considered to be the official report.

On behalf of the ANSYS, Inc. staff, I would like to extend to you

and your associates, warm wishes for a prosperous year in 1996.

                                        Sincerely,

                                        ANSYS, Inc.

                  ANSYS Revision Identifier Description

ANSYS revision identifiers consist of a major revision level, a

minor revision level, a correction level, and occasionally a special

version level. An example of how this is constructed is shown below:

                             Figure omitted.

Major revision level changes indicate that new features have been

added to the program and that some level of program architecture change

and/or file structure has occurred. Minor revision level changes also

indicate that new features have been added to the program, but files are

upwardly compatible. All known error fixes in included in both minor and

major revisions. Changes to the collection level indicate that it is

primarily an error correction release. Special version identifiers

indicate that one or more additional minor changes have been made to the

program, normally to circumvent an error. Special versions are not

general releases to all ANSYS licensees, since they typically represent

errors occurring only on one system, a subset of our customers who have

specific graphics devices, etc.

The ANSYS revision identifier(s) shown under "corrected in" on the

front side of this Class3 Error Report indicates the first possible

revision that could contain the correction. A major program change

needed to fix an error can dictate that the next minor or major revision

will contain the fix rather than the next correction level. For example,

when errors were being reported while Rev. 4.3A was the latest production

version, most Class3 error reports indicated that 4.3B was the "corrected

in" revision. Others requiring significant code restructuring were

reported as fixed in 4.4. Rev. 4.3B was never released, but Rev. 4.4

contained all error corrections noted as fixed in 4.3B.

An identifier indicated under "corrected in" does not guarantee that

a general release of that revision of ANSYS will occur. It does indicate

that the correction is known and implemented in the coding that would be

part of that general release.

                     Equivalent Product Identifiers

The ANSYS family of products occasionally undergoes name changes

between revisions and/or changes in the functionality of derived products

(such as ANSYS-PC/LINEAR). To minimize the potential for confusion in

these areas, the important product name equivalences (similar program

functionality and error content) are listed below.

ANSYS/ED contains all errors the full ANSYS product,

shown for starting at Rev. 5.0, and

                                             beyond, unless otherwise

                                             noted.

PC/LINEAR is equivalent to WS/LINEAR at Rev. 4.4A,

                                        and ANSYS/LINEAR starting

                                             at Rev. 5.0.

PC/LINEAR is equivalent to WS/THERMAL at Rev. 4.4A

                                        and ANSYS/THERMAL starting

                                             at Rev. 5.0.

PREPPOST contains relevant the full ANSYS product,

errors shown for for included pre- and

                                             postprocessing

                                             functionality

DESCRIPTION OF ERROR:

The results are incorrect for certain line elements after the first

substep when certain material properties (MP commands) change between

substeps (such as caused by a temperature-dependent material property)

and large deflections are not used (NLGEOM,OFF). The following specific

cases are erroneous:

1. BEAM3,4,23,24,44,54 and PIPE16,59, if the shear modulus (GXY) is

changed but Young's modulus (EX) is not changed.

2. PIPE17, the piping tee element, if any material property is changed.

SUBJECT: POST1 NFORCE AXISYMMETRIC STRUCTURES

DESCRIPTION:

The NFORCE command has no specialization for axisymmetric

structures. Therefore, the POST1 NFORCE command produces incorrect

results for some loads when using axisymmetric structures. The NFORCE

command treats all forces and moments as if they were in three-

dimensional space.

There will be a change in the documentation to clarify this

limitation.
