The Third Generation GVI products consist of three levels of data: B (weekly), C (monthly) and D (climatology). The composition of each archive tape for these levels is detailed in the following tables. Currently, all archive tapes are IBM 3480 cartridges which nominally contain 180 Mbytes of data, (but each archive tape is not necessarily full).
B-level archive tapes contain four to five weeks of data in the Plate Carrée projection only. Typically these tapes contain 80-85 Mbytes of data and two inputs can be stacked to one 3480 output cartridge.

Each C-level archive tape contains three months of data. A customer may request that three archive tapes be stacked to one output tape, since nine months of C-level data can typically be stored in 165 Mbytes. Note that the months are ordered on the archive tapes as indicated in Table M-2.

Each D-level archive tape contains six months of either means or standard deviations of the C-level data for the period of 1985 through 1990. Typically, six months of D-level data can be stored in approximately 61 Mbytes. Thus, it is possible to stack two or three input tapes to one output (depending on the media). Note that the months are ordered chronologically as indicated in Table M-3. This time series excludes the entire year of 1988 because of NOAA-9's low sun elevation angle.
