Electron micrograph of a soybean cyst nematode

The soybean cyst nematode will puncture a cell with its stylet to feed. The stylet is a hollow tube like a straw that allows the nematode to suck the nutrients from the soybean.  The female soybean cyst nematode injects saliva that is thought to help produce a feeding site called a syncytium.  The syncytium is a multinucleate cell formed by fusion of cells that surround the initial feeding cell.  This serves as a sink for metabolites from the soybean to be passed to the nematode, depriving the soybean of energy needed for growth and forming seed.
