Seismicity Report for Northern California, for the three week period of December 14, 1995 - Jan 3, 1996 Steve Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 (Note: This report includes seismicity data recorded by the Northern California Seismic Network in Menlo Park during the period of the federal furlough. It does not include data for the rest of the United States and the World that is typically made available by the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. Regular weekly reports will resume with the January 4-10 summary. San Francisco Bay Area Seismicity in the Bay Area during the 3-week hiatus was typical for the most part with small clusters on the creeping San Andreas and along the central Calaveras. The Calaveras was most active with half a dozen M2-3 events east of Gilroy (#3/1), aftershocks to a M3.9 on December 12. The largest Calaveras earthquake however occurred just this past Friday about six miles northeast of Morgan Hill (#9/1). No reports were received that any of these Calaveras earthquakes were felt. The San Andreas experienced its usual small cluster near San Juan Bautista (#7/1). The largest event in this cluster was a M3.3 event on Christmas Eve that may have been felt locally. More interesting was a trio of small events on the peninsula San Andreas near Portola Valley (#2/1). The Portola Valley area has proved to be the most active area along the otherwise "locked" peninsula segment. In the past 25 years about a dozen M3 earthquakes have occurred here, nearly half during a small swarm in June, 1975. Other events of interest were a M2.0 northwest of Pacifica (#4/1), a M2.2 northwest of Orinda (#8/1), and a M1.8 beneath San Pablo Bay northwest of Point Pinole (#6/1). Northern & Central California After more than a year of sporadic aftershocks, the Markleeville area returned to center stage with a pair of M5 earthquakes that were widely felt throughout the Tahoe Basin, as far west as Sacramento, and as far south as Fresno (#6/2). These moderate earthquakes occurred in the same general area as a M6.0 in September, 1994. Activity in the Cape Mendocino area consisted of five events larger than M2 along the Mendocino fracture zone, the largest a M3.4 on December 14 (#1/2). Three more M2 events occurred parallel to the north coast west and south of Eureka. Four deep earthquakes occurred beneath the Klamath Mountains during the three week hiatus, all presumably related to subduction of the Gorda Plate. Beginning with a pair of 29-km-deep M2.6 events on December 15 (#2/2) activity continued with a 27-km-deep M2.5 event on December 24 (#7/2) and a 44-km-deep M2.8 on January 3 (#9/2). Notable activity in the central Coast Range included a pair of M3's at the Geysers geothermal area (#3/2), a M3.1 near Lake Berryessa (#8/), a M2.0 on the southern Maacama fault west of Lakeport, and a pair of M2 events on the Bartlett Springs fault north of Clear Lake. Long Valley Caldera Two clusters of M2 earthquakes occurred within the caldera during the reporting period. Early on December 19 five M2 events occurred just two miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes (#3/3). All five occurred in a short, 12-minute burst that trailed out with about as many M1 events over the next 1-2 hours. None were reported to have been felt in Mammoth Lakes. On December 30 a pair of M2 events occurred along the south rim of the calderas southwest of the airport (#5/3). They were followed two days later by a M2.5 about one mile farther east. The main activity south of the caldera were a pair of M3 events southwest of Mt. Morrison (#6/3). Table 1. Note: Computer users can get faster access to the Weekly Seismicity Reports in any of three ways: 1. World-Wide-Web (WWW) access: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov 2. Anonymous FTP access: quake.wr.usgs.gov (in pub/www/QUAKES/WEEKREPS) 3. Email Access: (send email to michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov) Notes for Table 1: Origin time in the list is in GMT, in the text and on maps it is in local time. N RD: is the number of readings used to locate the event. N S: is the number of S waves in N RD. RMS SEC: is the root mean squared residual misfit for the location is seconds, the lower the better, over 0.3 to 0.5 seconds is getting bad, but this is machine, not hand timed, data. ERH: is the estimated horizontal error in kilometers. ERZ: is the estimated vertical error in kilometers. N FM: is the number of readings used to compute the magnitude. REMKS: obtuse region codes that denote the velocity model used to locate the event. DUR MAG: is the magnitude as determined from the duration of the seismograms, not the amplitude. Sort of like going to echo canyon and measuring how loud your yell is by counting echos. FIG: denotes the figure/event number in the maps posted separately.
