It was derived and extensively updated from a previous release by McFaul and others, 2000. The original and unedited dataset is CO_MRDS.xls. Only fields that are commonly populated and therefore may be of interest in analyzing mineral trends are included in this file; for instance, comment fields are not included in the GIS dataset. Purpose: To spatially show locations and relationships between known mineral occurrences in Colorado. Supplemental_Information: This dataset was excerpted from the McFaul and others, 2000 data release for North America. The data were intially compiled by or for the USGS over a span of many years. Few updates have been made to the Colorado data in about 20 years. Most of those updates have been for localities in, or adjacent to, National Forests. This digital map is not to be construed as a legal representation of any locality, nor is the data within any field considered reliable. In most cases, the data should not be used at scales larger than 1:500,000, although many localities are accurately located certainly at 1:24,000 scale. Any hardcopies utilizing this data set shall clearly indicate this source. If the user has modified the data in any way, (s)he is obligated to describe the types of modifications performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent this dataset, nor imply that changes were approved by the USGS. In general, the data are accurate at 1:500,000, though in many cases locations are accurate at 1:24,000. The accuracy can not be determined from this database. Completeness_Report: Only mines and prospects that have been gleaned from the literature and former databases are included. In many cases, the data have not been revised in many years. Most mineral localities discovered or documented in the last 20 or so years are completely missing. Queries of the data against other spatial data layers confirmed many of the numerous errors and pointed out others. Comparison with other local datasets (i.e. Wilson and LaRock, 1992, for Summit County and Wilson and others, 2001, for Gunnison, Uncompahgre, and Grand Mesa National Forests) pointed out several hundred more problems. Each of the records in the McFaul and others dataset has been retained or, if deleted (either because it is unverifiable or duplicates another record)it has been given to those who maintain the master MRDS database, if it is ever updated. Process_Step: Process_Description: 5470 MRDS records for Colorado were extracted from the master MRDS database (2001) by selecting on the State field. From this, only 50 fields were selected to limit the total record length to roughly 4000 characters, a size that most desktop GIS programs can accomodate. The complete dataset is included with this release as CO_MRDS.xls. Dozens of fields for hundreds of records were revised for the CO_MRDS file in this report although the original data are in the .xls database included in this report. Prefixes of "1:" or "2:" should be ignored. Frequently used columns that contained those prefixes have been reformated to exclude them. LAT_DMS and LONG_DMS are not accurate. The grossest errors have been changed to make the locality reasonable but not accurate. Likewise, the TOWNSHIP and RANGE have been superseded by TOWN and RNG. The former are retained to use to cross-check vague or inaccurate localities. TOWNSHIP and RANGE may include multiple entries: TOWN and RNG are only the township and range where the site is currently plotted. QUAD24, QUAD100, and QUAD250 have all been extensively revised. Entries with a date in parentheses were retained from the original database. USBM_NO was filled in if the lead author could reasonably ascertain that a record in the CO_MAS file directly corresponded to a CO_MRDS record. It is not always the same record number as the record in FIL_LINK. Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation: Anna B.
