Description:
Abstract:
The map database was created from unpublished materials
interpreted by William G. Pierce in 1982. The map along with
other map data was assembled into the geologic map of the Cody
2-degree quadrangle, Wyoming at a a scale of 1:250,000. Both
the National Geologic Map Database and the Greater
Yellowstone Science Initiative needed digital geologic map
data adequately attributed for many kinds of analysis.
The accompanying database conforms the the preliminary North
American geologic map datamodel Revision 4.3. Attributes
attached to each polygon include a dataset id, a source
id and a classification object id (cls_obj)id). For polygons, the
classification object id is linked to the rest of the database
to qualify polygons with a rock unit code, rock unit name name,
a standard lithology, formation age, other miscellaneous data.
For lines, the classification onject id is linked to the rest of
the database to qualify lines with structure type, location
accuracy, and certainty of existence.
Purpose:
The conversion of bedrock geology information of the map into
a digital format enables easy overlay with other layers for
analysis and development of other themes. Use at a scale larger
than 1:50,000 is not recommended.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The attribute of the mapped units and structures were done by
William G. Pierce in 1982. The digital version has been checked
visually for consistency with the original materials. All
polygons and lines have attributes that reflect the values on
the compilation materials.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The dataset was checked by comparing check plots with the
original maps. Map elements were checked visually for overshoots,
undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure, and other
errors by the author. In Addition, automated (ARC/INFO) routines
were used used to check for polygon label errors, line
attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection
errors and projection information.
Completeness_Report:
The dataset included all possible information from the
compilation materials for use at a scale of 1:100,000.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The original materials were scanned at 400 dots-per-inch on an
Anatech optical scanner. The scan was saved as a 256-level
gray-scale TIFF image. The TIFF image was "cleaned up" in Adobe
Photoshop (TM). The TIFF image was changed to a bit-mapped image
and changed to an RLC file. The RLC file was georeferenced and
autovectorized in LT4X, a commercial software package. The
resulting vectors were cleaned up in ARC/INFO and built into a
polygon coverage. The attributes were then added. The original
scanned image after registration to the coverage was used as a
backdrop to constantly check the coverage for accurcay of line
placement as well as attribution of the polygons and lines. The
ARC/INFO coverage was then converted to ARCVIEW shape files and
associated DBASE (DBF) files.
