Prioritizing Microorganisms
for Agricultural Use
CSREES has invested in sequencing more than
25 agriculturally important microorganisms.
One of the issues still facing CSREES is
how to prioritize agriculturally important
microorganisms for genome sequencing.
In setting priorities, CSREES seeks input
from stakeholders. There are countless agriculturally
significant microorganisms, including pathogens
that threaten food safety, rumen microorganisms
that help livestock digest feed, plant and
animal pathogens, nitrogen-fixing bacteria
that help plants grow, and bacteria that
help ferment food.
Efforts are ongoing to prioritize microorganisms
for sequencing in particular areas of importance
to agriculture. CSREES funds numerous projects
in this area of research.
