2003 Prairie View A&M
Research Apprentice Program (RAP) Tour

The Research Apprentice Program is designed to introduce outstanding high school students to the many career opportunities associated with agriculture. These photos are from the RAP Tour at the USDA-ARS-Southern Plains Agricultural Research Center (SPARC) in College Station, TX.

The students had the opportunity to "sample" the contents of the rumen (the first of four divisions of the stomach in cattle) contents of a fistulated cow under the guidance of Dr. Todd Callaway.  The opening into the cow's rumen is designed to aid in the research of nutrition utilization and microbial activities within the rumen.

The students also had the opportunity to visit with Drs. Gretchen Jones, Michael Hume, Matt Burnham, and Geno Medrano concerning their respective research programs.
