Paddle Bayou Lafourche
An Initiative of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program
November 12-15, 2004

When the leaves begin to fall and a touch of coolness is in the air, it is
time to take to the water and experience the natural elegance of Bayou
Lafourche. Now in its 5th year, Paddle Bayou Lafourche is held the second
weekend in November and takes paddlers from the headwaters of Bayou
Lafourche in Donaldsonville to the seafaring community of Lockport.

From the wilder bayou origins at the Mississippi River, the 52-mile, 4-day
expedition winds its way through a number of rural communities and several
small cities. Paddlers are treated not only to scenic natural vistas, but
a fascinating "backyard view" of the inhabitants of this historic bayou as
well.

Outstanding evening educational entertainment, great food and a free
shuttle are all part of the trip. Paddlers may pick and choose which
day(s) to participate (from one to four days) or enjoy the bonding,
camaraderie and sense of accomplishment that comes from going the
distance--Donaldsonville to Lockport.

It is our belief that people will protect that which they love and
appreciate. The goal of the journey is to cultivate a sense of pride and
stewardship in Bayou Lafourche so that it may be protected and treasured.
Success can be measured not only in the number of paddling participants,
but also in the signs, food, music and cheers offered by the residents of
the bayou to paddlers as the flotilla passes their homes.

We invite you to join in this celebration of our bayou through
participation in volunteer opportunities, sponsorship of a paddler, or
contributions for food and other expenses.
