Abstract: North Carolina Sea Grant and the North CarolinaDepartment of Environment and Natural Resources, Divisionof Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the NC Centerfor Geographic Information and Analysis, developed thedigital geographic information system (GIS) Paddle Trails, Coastal Plaindata to as part of an ongoing effort to inventory and publicizewatertrails through DPR's trails programs. This data containsthe trail locations and access points for the inventoried trailsin the coastal plain of North Carolina. Other trails in thecoastal plain and in other portions of the state are to beinventoried as resources allow.
Purpose: This data was created as part of the North Carolina Coastal PlainPaddle Trails Initiative, a private grant funded program withNC Sea Grant. This initiative consisted off multiple parts thatranged from a paddler's inventory to economic impact assessments.This effort has developed an understanding of how paddling and paddlingrelated actions impact and interact with the environment, localestablishment and infrastructure and can help guide efforts inthe development of ecotourism.
