Abstract: | ||||||||||
Title VI Undergraduate National Resource Center (NRC) Application For South Asia And Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS). The North Carolina Center for South Asia Studies of the Triangle South Asia Consortium is a 19 year-old educational cooperative of Duke University, North Carolina State University (NCSU), and The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). National Resource Center Theme: The programming theme is The Public: Arenas of Transaction, Arenas of Intersection, which seeks to examine from the ground up the fluid nature of the public, the lived sites of South Asian cultures (e.g., urban spaces, architecture, symbols, medical material) as they affect and interact with the larger top down frameworks of authority and power (e.g., social and religious institutions, courts, health systems). Proposed NRC Programing Activities: Highlights;1) group 1: four-year perspectives from the ground-up reading groups, workshops, and culminating in a conference on the the public in year four on material culture and its symbols. 2) group 2: four-year top-down perspectives a series of workshops on universal principles, culminating in two conferences, both complementing the other working group. 3)dissemination of results in community college workshops and speakers series with Fayetteville State University and North Carolina Central University to create new model for partnering with HBCUs. Curricular Innovation: 1)restructuring of Triangle-wide course in South Asian civilizations. 2) addition of advanced courses in LCTLS of Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Bangla, and Tamil with tele-video. 3)development of proficiency testing and pedagogy in Persian, Bangla, and Tamil, to be tested at SASLI. 3)teleconference Hindi-Urdu classes with Fayetteville State University; plan for Farsi, Dari, and Pastho. Proposed NRC Institution-Building Activities:1) subsidy for new faculty position in South Asian Geography at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. 2) subsidy for full-time lecturer in Hindi-Urdu at North Carolina State University. 3)acquisitions budget for the combined libraries of Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN). Currilar Programs and Degree Tracks: Duke: BA major and minor in International Comparative Studies; BA Major Hindi Lang. and Lit. UNC-CH: BA minor in Hindi-Urdu in Asian Studies, with proposed new BA major in Hindi-Urdu Lang. and Lits.; BA major in International Studies-South Asia emphasis. NCSU: BA Major in International Studies-South Asia emphasis; BA minor, in Asia Studies with South Asia emphasis; BA minor in Hindi-Urdu. Faculty: 1)38 core faculty (primary research & teaching interest in area) in more than a dozen disciplines. 2)26 allied faculty (serious long-term research or teaching interest in the area). Libraries: 1)Triangle Research Libraries Network (Duke, UNC-CH, NCSU, NCCU, & NHC) combined collection totaling 14.5 million volumes (with est. less than 30% overlap) and 141,000 serial subscription titles. 2)300,000 South Asia titles (2000+ serials), 69,000 of which are in South Asia vernaculars. 3)dispersed vernacular collection policy, with TRLN-wide bibliographer managing all collections. Outreach:1) K-12 Teacher training workshops for International Baccalaureate programs in Triangle schools. 2) speakers bureau and consultation for K-16 and for the general public, business, media, government. 3) public performance series and radio show on South Asia music (WKNC 88.1 FM). | ||||||||||
