Washington, D.C., March 20, 2001 -- The Voice of America's Hindi Service has begun to provide programming to Radio India, which broadcasts to the Greater Toronto area and parts of Southern Ontario, Canada. Hundreds of thousands of Torontans who are from the Indian sub-continent tune in to Radio India for news and information.

"Although our primary audience is in India, many who have moved from India to other parts of the world, such as the community in Toronto, ask for VOA programming because they know that it will bring them news of their homeland," said Jagdish Sarin, Chief of VOA's Hindi Service. "Radio India, with the addition of VOA Hindi programming, will join more than 1,000 radio, TV, and Internet affiliates worldwide that receive VOA programming in one or more of the 53 languages VOA broadcasts."

VOA is providing an hour and a half of Hindi and a half-hour of Urdu programming daily to Radio India. The station's management requested this programming from VOA and also wants to add VOA Bangla programming in the near future.
