Overview: |
Participants continue the foundation work in speaking and understanding the Urdu language and culture. Small groups participate in mini-dialogues to learn how to communicate more effectively in the language. Grammar, reading and writing continue to be an integral part of the course. Prerequisite: Introduction to Urdu I (URDU1151E) or equivalent. |

Objective
To provide the student with a foundation for speaking and understanding the Urdu language and culture through studies of grammar, reading and writing.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to conduct simple conversations in Urdu dealing with everyday situations, and to read and write the Urdu script.
Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include an introduction of oblique plural of nouns and adjectives; order within the noun phrase; possessive modifiers of a phrase; quantity and price; oblique pronouns; apna ("one's own"); phonetics of retroflex and dental stops; repetition of adjectives, interrogatives and numerals; object forms; koi (anybody, etc.); ordinal numbers; complex verbal formations; conjunctive participles; the verb hona ("to be") used to change the meaning of a sentence; and the verb sekna ("to be able").
Methods of instruction include dialogues, oral classroom exercises, group work, examinations and written exercises.
