Abstract:A resource kit for teaching French in a French-Canadian cultural context is represented by a teacher's guide, a student resource booklet, and a tape transcript. This module is designed for use at the intermediate or advanced level of secondary instruction. Classroom activities are based on a cassette tape that introduces some of the phonological characteristics of Canadian French. Variations between Canadian and Standard French are used to introduce students to some linguistic phenomena and terminology. Upon completion of the module, the student will have an acquaintance with: (1) language variation and its sociocultural basis; (2) specific phonological and lexical differences among varieties of French (for example, apico-dental vs. uvular "r"); and (3) the phenomena of assibilation and diphthongization. Two listening comprehension quizzes are included. One of these is designed to test ability to discriminate between Canadian and Standard French sounds, the other to assess comprehension of a prose passage read in Canadian French. (JB)
