TEXAS – Twenty-three cadets from the Texas Wing attended a statewide summer flight encampment at the Texas State Technical College Airport near Waco, Texas.
The cadets graduated after receiving six days of ground school and up to 10 hours of flight instruction.
Twenty of the cadets were recommended for solo flight by a certified Federal Aviation Administration instructor.
Two Gladewater Corsair Composite Squadron cadets were awarded their wings after flying solo in a Cessna-172. Cadets Capt. Kyle Vaughn and 2nd Lt. Stephen Mouton have both been members of the Gladewater Corsair squadron for more than four years.
Cadet Vaughn will be a junior at Mount Pleasant High School this fall in Waco, and Cadet Mouton will be a junior at Pine Tree High School in Waco.
Both cadets plan to continue their flight lessons this summer and get their private pilot license and hope to attend a service academy and become military pilots.
Fifteen CAP pilots from the Texas Wing who are FAA-certified flight instructors donated their time during the encampment.
The cadets stayed in barracks at the airport, which is a former military base. The airport is on the edge of the presidential restricted flying area, requiring CAP to make special arrangements with the FAA and Secret Service to conduct the training missions during the part of the week when President Bush was at his ranch near Waco.
