CURRENT RESEARCH
Gerald (Gerry) Anderson is an Ecologist for the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory, Sidney, MT. Gerry's background is in native grassland ecology and natural resource management. He has specialized in the area of integrating spatial information technology such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and global positioning systems (GPS) to investigate specific agricultural and natural resource problems. He is also a native of North Dakota with hands-on experience in production and commercial agriculture.
Gerry is currently leading the site-specific farming initiative for ARS in Sidney, MT. The
objectives of this research are to:
use remote sensing, global positioning, and geographic information system technology to monitor and map within field growth and yield variations for sugar beets and wheat; relate within field growth and yield variance to the spatial distribution of physical and chemical properties of the soil, key plant biochemical levels, and competing undesirable plant species
determine the suitability, reliability, and cost efficiency of using remote sensing devices and various ground sampling methodologies for identifying and mapping specific factors contributing to within field variation
Gerry is the Co-Principal Investigator for Team Leafy Spurge. The objectives of this project are to:
develop and integrate sustainable leafy spurge management methods in a broad demonstration project with national implications and applicability
form long-term partnerships among federal, state, and private land managers
transfer to land managers economically sound and ecologically proven technologies to manage leafy spurge
