Many other animals—both real and imaginary–also have become symbols for certain ideas and qualities. The animals have been selected because they have specific traits or qualities. Oxen, for instance, are strong and powerful, therefore the ox is a common symbol for strength.

You can make a work of art with an animal symbol. Either select an animal from the list below, or create an animal symbol of your own. Choose a quality such as gentleness, slyness, diligence, or lazyness. Can you think of an animal known for having that quality?

Make a picture with paints, marker, or crayons that uses your animal symbol to help you tell a story. For example, a dove might fly above a city that is in great conflict. Or a lion might encourage someone who is afraid to try something new. Show your family and friends your finished artwork and teach them about symbols and how they can be applied in art.
