Program or Study Name: Swine Brucellosis Eradication Program
General Information:
Species: Swine
Disease:   Brucellosis
Contact Agency:   USDA, APHIS, VS, National Center for Animal Health Programs (NCAHP)
Overview:   The National Swine Brucellosis Eradication Program is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinary Services (VS) in cooperation with state animal health regulatory services and the livestock industry. The program's objective is to exclude Brucella suis from the United States commercial production swine population. Surveillance is conducted through testing of blood samples collected at markets and slaughter plants from commercial sows and boars older than 6 months. In 2007, all states, with the exception of Texas, maintained their brucellosis-free status.
Disease Information:
Disease Information:   Swine brucellosis is most commonly caused by the bacterium Brucella suis. It is found in most countries of the world. Transmission occurs through ingestion of infected tissues or fluids, or veneral contact. It can also be transmitted mechanically by fomites. Clinical signs include abortion, sterility, orchitis, lameness, posterior paralysis, spondylitis, metritis, and abscess formation in the extremities. Segregation from infected animals is the primary method of disease prevention. Swine brucellosis is a serious potential zoonotic disease with important trade implications. Currently, all U.S. states, with the exception of Texas (free status application under review), are classified as brucellosis-free. The commingling of infected feral and backyard swine with domestic swine remains an issue in maintaining free status in the commercial swine segment.
Details about the Surveillance Program or Study:
Population:   Select sows and boars older than 6 months of age that are sold at market or slaughtered are tested for brucellosis.
Coverage:   The Swine Brucellosis Eradication Program is a national program. Surveillance program standards are currently met in all states and reviewed by VS on a triennial basis.
Data collection
location(s):
  Samples for the Swine Brucellosis Eradication Program are collected on the farm as part of the swine brucellosis validation program, at concentration points (live animal markets, exhibitions, etc.), and at slaughter.
Samples Collected:   Swine brucellosis testing is performed on sow-boar serum samples.
Data Collected:   Titers are run for swine brucellosis on serum samples collected from positively identified sow and boars at slaughter.
Frequency:   Samples are collected daily at slaughter and at markets as they occur.
Reporting / Information Distribution Process:   Monthly and annual reports are generated, and status maps are posted to the website. Any positive samples are submitted to program officials for epidemiological workup with possible herd-testing required.
Scope:   This is a National State-Federal Cooperative program with all states participating.
