Loser

By Jerry Spinelli

Translated by Ahmed Hassan Mohamed
Published by Nahdet Misr

Donald Zinkoff is a kid who loves school, likes people, and laughs easily. But his uncontrolled behavior, sloppy handwriting, bad grades, horrible flute playing, and ineptitude at sports brand him a “loser” among his schoolmates. Despite his friends’ harsh treatment, Zinkoff continues to enjoy life. At the end of the story, he is transformed from “loser” to school hero.

Author Jerry Spinelli discusses how “losers” and “winners” are created in school culture through the Newbery Award winning story of young Zinkoff in his early years of elementary school.

Jerry Spinelli is one of the most gifted storytellers in contemporary young adult literature. His Newbery Award winning novels include Maniac Megee and Wringer.
