Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today released this statement following the announcement by the Department of Veterans Affairs that construction of the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Wagner is moving forward despite unforeseen delays:
I was pleased to receive word today that the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indian Health Service have made progress in the construction of the Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Wagner. At its peak, the clinic will provide health services to 1,200 veterans in South Dakota at a time when much-needed services are all too hard to find in rural areas.
Today’s announcement is a positive step, and I will continue to work with local officials and federal agencies to ensure construction of this clinic is completed in a timely way. Our veterans have proudly served our nation, and this clinic will help us do our part to fulfill our commitment to them.
According to the VA, a memorandum of understanding has been completed that will allow Indian Health Service (IHS) to issue a building permit for the clinic, which will be located at the corner of Washington Avenue and Highway 46. Support services, including supplies, janitorial, maintenance, trash and snow removal, parking lot/grounds maintenance, and security will be purchased from IHS.
As Chairman of the Senate Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, Johnson announced in 2007 that the Department of Veterans Affairs would open two new CBOC’s in Watertown, SD and Wagner, SD.
The CBOC is established to improve veterans’ access to primary and specialty care in rural areas. Services will include comprehensive primary care, health promotion, maintenance, routine/urgent care procedures and education.
