Plant Megafossils
Common name: wood fern. The modern genus is native to the temperate northern hemisphere, and several varieties are grown today as garden ornamentals. Other members of the Aspleniaceae, the grass fern (Asplenium septentrionale) and the maidenhair spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes), grow in the Monument today.

Pollen Morphotypes
- Polypodiisporonites secundus - Monolete fern spore from the botanical family Polypodiacea. One genus of modern Polypodiacea, Polypodium punctatum, grows in large spreading colonies on borders between sunlight and shade in humid areas.
- Lygodiumsporites adriennis - Trilete fern spore from the botanical family Shizaeaceae, a small family of mainly tropical ferns.
- Baculatisporites sp. A - Trilete fern spore from the botanical family Osmundaceae.
- Lucatisporis perinatus - Trilete fern spore from the botanical family Selaginellaceae. Lucatisporis perinatus is found throughout most of the middle shale unit.
- Azolla cretacea - Azolla has a geologic record dating back to the Upper Cretaceous to today. Modern Azolla (Family Salviniaceae) is a small free-floating fern found in freshwater lakes and ponds. Azolla cretacea is found only in the middle shale unit.
