     Another fast-moving asteroidal object has been discovered by
Eleanor Helin and Eugene Shoemaker on exposures with the 1.2-m
Schmidt telescope at Palomar.  Precise positions are as follows:

We will start with OSOD solution #6, incorporating 129 optical 
astrometry determinations, including two pre-discovery points from 1954.  

Jon Giorgini estimates the following 1-sigma errors for Oct 23.0:
    
     9.7", 4.1 Hz, 1474.1 usec.



Setups

If this really is a 4-km object, the echo bandwidth will be about 110 Hz if we are near the equator. The initial cw setup will be: bandwidth: 4000 Hz (sample interval: 2500 x 0.1 usec) frequencies: 2 (to give reduced data a 2000-Hz window) FFT: 1024 (for 3.90625-Hz resolution) (VME should run FFT=4096, for 0.98-Hz resn) dwell: 30 s Our strategy for this experiment is to start with cw and then go to coarse-baud ranging with the 11- and 7-usec setups, refine the ephemeris, and proceed to finer-baud imaging, depending on the asteroid's echo signature and the system's performance. (The delay depth may be greater than 10 usec.) The 11- and 7-us setups from 1991 JX probably will be adequate to yield range detections in less than 10 runs each. _______________________________________________________________________ POSSIBLE RANGING SETUPS: (code=127, FFT=64, single-pol'n) These are from JX, w/ max-band (min-acc) options from Ray Jurgens. Instructions

NOTE: During the intervals, DOY 297 Oct. 23 06:00-08:00 UTC DOY 298 Oct. 24 08:00-09:45 UTC we will be transmitting LCP, and using our standard cw setup. This is to accommodate plans by scientists in Japan, at the Usuda 64-m antenna and the Kashima 34-m antenna, to attempt interferometric reception of echoes from our cw transmissions. We will send our Japanese collaborators a log of transmitter on/off times after each of the above intervals. [We will be running monostatically (just with DSS-14) throughout all 1982 TA tracks. ==========================================================================
