Residents of the National Park are mourning the loss of Bunty. The heavy shadow of grief hangs particularly heavy over the log cabin of district Ranger Greer on the Carbon River. More than a year ago a government lion hunter came to Mrs. Greer with a tiny spotted faun in his arms. He had by good fortune, found the little fellow soon after a prowling mountain lion had killed its mother and saved it from starvation by carrying it to his camp, where he shared with it his scanty store of condensed milk. But Bunty did not thrive on canned milk so he gave her to the kind hearted wife of Ranger Greer who loves all wild animals, (with the exception of the cat tribe). Under Mrs. Greer's solicitous care, and with the fresh milk which she bought and warmed for her several times each day, Bunty grew and prospered. Soon she was the pet of all the park people, and the numerous visitors as well, but always she was Mrs. Greer's special charge. However as the faun grew she acquired bad habits, one of which was her choice of bed. For some reason unknown to her friends Bunty scorned the shelter they offered her and chose to sleep in the middle of the automobile highway. Recently Ranger Greer found Bunty in the road with her neck broken. She was struck by a passing car. | ||||||||||
