TRANSPORTATION, COMMUNICATIONS, AND UTILITIES
Transportation, Communications, Electric, Gas, and Sanitary Services as defined
in Division E (Major Groups 40 through 49) in the 1987 Standard Industrial
Classification (SIC) Manual includes establishments providing passenger and
freight transportation, communications services, or electricity, gas, steam,
water or sanitary services to the general public or to other businesses. Many
of the industries are engaged in related activities. For example,
establishments of communications, pipeline, and utility enterprises include
power generation, pumping, transmission, and distribution.
Totals for all establishments exclude the United States Postal Service.
TOTAL TRANSPORTATION EXCEPT UNITED STATES POST OFFICE
Totals for all establishments in Transportation SIC Major Groups 40 (Railroad
transportation), 41 (Local and suburban transit and interurban highway
passenger transportation), 42 (Motor freight transportation and warehousing),
44 (Water transportation), 45 (Transportation by air), 46 (Pipelines, except
natural gas), and 47 (Transportation services), except the United States Post
Office.
RAILROAD TRANSPORTATION (SIC MAJOR GROUP 40)
This group includes establishments furnishing transportation by line-haul
railroad, and switching and terminal establishments. Passenger railways
serving a single municipality, contiguous municipalities, or a municipality
and its suburban areas are classified in Major Group 41. Other services
related to railroad transportation are classified in Major Group 47. Lessors
of railroad property are classified in Real Estate, Industry 6517.
LOCAL AND SUBURBAN TRANSIT AND INTERURBAN HIGHWAY PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION
(SIC MAJOR GROUP 41)
This group includes establishments primarily engaged in furnishing local and
suburban passenger transportation, such as those providing passenger
transportation within a single municipality, contiguous municipalities, or a
municipality and its suburban area, by bus, rail, or subway, either separately
or in combination, and establishments engaged in furnishing transportation to
local scenic features. Also included are establishments primarily engaged in
furnishing highway passenger transportation and establishments furnishing
highway passenger terminal or maintenance facilities. Intercity bus lines are
included in this major group, but interurban railways are classified in Major
Group 40.

LOCAL AND SUBURBAN PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION (SIC 411)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing road or rail passenger
transportation confined principally to a municipality, contiguous
municipalities, or a municipality and its suburban areas, other than by
taxicab, school bus, or charter service. Establishments primarily engaged in
furnishing local and suburban passenger transportation by water are classified
in Major Group 44 and those providing local and suburban transportation by
air are classified in Major Group 45.
LOCAL AND SUBURBAN TRANSIT (SIC 4111)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing local and suburban mass
passenger transportation over regular routes and on regular schedules, with
operations confined principally to a municipality, contiguous municipalities,
or a municipality and its suburban areas. Also included in this industry are
establishments primarily engaged in furnishing passenger transportation by
automobile, bus, or rail to, from, or between airports or rail terminals, over
regular routes, and those providing bus and rail commuter services.
LOCAL PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION, N.E.C. (SIC 4119)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing miscellaneous passenger
transportation, where such operations are principally within a municipality,
contiguous municipalities, or a municipality and its suburban areas.
Establishments primarily engaged in renting passenger automobiles without
drivers are classified in Services, Industry Group 751. Establishments
primarily operating ski lifts, tows, and other recreational lifts are
classified in Services, Industry 7999.

SIGHTSEEING BUS (SIC 4119 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing sightseeing buses where such
operations are principally within a single municipality, contiguous
municipalities, or a municipality and its suburban areas.
LIMOUSINE OR AUTO RENTAL WITH DRIVER (SIC 4119 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing limousines or auto rentals with
drivers, where such operations are principally within a single municipality,
contiguous municipalities, or a municipality and its suburban areas.

AMBULANCE OR RESCUE SERVICE, EXCEPT BY AIR (SIC 4119 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing ambulances or rescue services,
except by air, where such operations are primarily within a single
municipality, contiguous municipalities, or a single municipality and its
suburban areas.
OTHER LOCAL PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION, N.E.C. (SIC 4119 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing miscellaneous passenger
transportation, where such operations are principally within a single
municipality, contiguous municipalities, or a municipality and its suburban
areas.
TAXICABS (SIC 412)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing passenger transportation by
automobiles not operated on regular schedules or between fixed terminals.
Taxicab fleet owners and organizations are included, regardless of whether
drivers are hired or rent their cabs or are otherwise compensated.
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing passenger transportation by
automobile or bus, to, from, or between airports or rail terminals, over
regular routes, are classified in Industry 4111. Taxicab associations and
similar organizations which do not operate taxicabs, but supply maintenance
and repair services to their members, are classified in Industry 4173.
OTHER BUS TRANSPORTATION AND TERMINAL SERVICE (SIC 413,4,5,7)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing passenger transportation by
motor vehicles, charter services, where such operations are principally
outside a single municipality, outside one group of contiguous municipalities,
or outside a single municipality and its suburban areas.
Includes establishments primarily engaged in furnishing passenger
transportation charter service where such operations are principally outside a
single municipality, outside one group of contiguous municipalities, or
outside a single municipality and its suburban areas. Also includes school
buses and establishments primarily engaged in the operation of motor vehicle
passenger terminals and of maintenance and service facilities, not operated by
companies that also furnish motor vehicle passenger transportation.
INTERCITY AND RURAL BUS TRANSPORTATION (SIC 413)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing bus transportation, over
regular routes and on regular schedules, the operations of which are
principally outside a single municipality, outside one group of contiguous
municipalities, and outside a single municipality and its suburban areas.
Charter bus transportation services are classified in Industry 4142.

CHARTER BUS SERVICE (SIC 414)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing passenger transportation
charter service either locally or outside a single municipality, outside one
group of contiguous municipalities, or outside a single municipality and its
suburban areas.
LOCAL BUS CHARTER SERVICE (SIC 4141)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing local bus charter service where
such operations are principally within a single municipality, contiguous
municipalities, or a municipality and its suburban areas. Charter bus
transportation services, except local, are classified in Industry 4142.

BUS CHARTER SERVICE, EXCEPT LOCAL (SIC 4142)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing bus charter service, except
local, where such operations are principally outside a single municipality,
outside one group of contiguous municipalities, and outside a single
municipality and its suburban areas.

SCHOOL BUSES (SIC 415)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating buses to transport pupils to and
from school. School bus establishments operated by educational institutions
should be treated as auxiliaries.
TERMINAL AND SERVICE FACILITIES FOR MOTOR VEHICLE PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION
(SIC 417)
Establishments primarily engaged in the operation of motor vehicle passenger
terminals and of maintenance and service facilities, not operated by companies
that also furnish motor vehicle passenger transportation. Establishments that
are owned by motor vehicle passenger transportation companies and are
primarily engaged in operating terminals for use of such vehicles are
classified in the same industry as the establishments providing the motor
vehicle transportation. Separate maintenance and service facilities operated
by companies furnishing motor vehicle passenger transportation should be
treated as auxiliaries. Establishments which provide motor vehicle
maintenance or service for the general public are classified in Services,
Industry Group 753.

MOTOR FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION AND WAREHOUSING (SIC MAJOR GROUP 42)
This group includes establishments furnishing local or long-distance trucking
or transfer services, or those engaged in the storage of farm products,
furniture and other household goods, or commercial goods of any nature.
The operation of terminal facilities for handling freight, with or without
maintenance facilities, is also included. Establishments primarily engaged in
the storage of natural gas are classified in Industry 4922. Field warehousing
is classified in Services, Industry 7389.
TRUCKING AND COURIER SERVICES, EXCEPT AIR (SIC 421)
Includes local trucking without storage (SIC 4212) and trucking, except local
(SIC 4213). Comprised of establishments primarily engaged in furnishing
trucking or transfer services without storage for freight generally weighing
more than 100 pounds, in a single municipality, contiguous municipalities, or
a municipality and its suburban areas; and of establishments primarily engaged
in furnishing "over-the-road" trucking services or trucking services and
storage services for freight generally weighing more than 100 pounds,
principally outside a single municipality, outside one group of contiguous
municipalities, or outside a single municipality and its suburban areas.
LOCAL TRUCKING WITHOUT STORAGE (SIC 4212)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking or transfer services
without storage for freight generally weighing more than 100 pounds, in a
single municipality, contiguous municipalities, or a municipality and its
suburban areas. Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing local courier
services for letters, parcels, and packages generally weighing less than 100
pounds are classified in Industry 4215; those engaged in collecting and
disposing of refuse by processing or destruction of materials are classified
in Industry 4953; those engaged in removing overburden from mines or quarries
are classified in Division B, Mining; and construction contractors hauling
dirt and rock as a part of their construction activity are classified in
Division C, Construction.
HOUSEHOLD GOODS MOVING (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking or transfer of
furniture and other household goods without storage, within a city, town or
other local area, including adjoining towns or suburban areas.
GENERAL FREIGHT (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking or transfer of general
merchandise without storage, within a city, town, or other local areas,
including adjoining towns or suburban areas.
Note: General merchandise is defined as materials or goods of many varieties
which are packaged or are readily handled and do not require refrigeration,
controlled humidity, or other special facilities.
GARBAGE AND TRASH COLLECTION (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in collecting and transporting garbage,
trash, and refuse, within a city, town, or other local area including
adjoining towns and suburban areas. Examples: local garbage collection and
transporting without disposal; rubbish hauling; local refuse collection and
transporting without disposal.
DUMP TRUCKING (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing dump trucking services of
sand, gravel, dirt, etc., within a city, town, or other local area, including
adjoining towns and suburban areas. Examples: local coal hauling, local
pulpwood hauling, local sand and gravel hauling.
OTHER LOCAL TRUCKING WITHOUT STORAGE, N.E.C. (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing other trucking service without
storage, not elsewhere classified, within a city, town, or other local area,
including adjoining towns and suburban areas.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking and transfer of
hazardous materials, including liquid petroleum products, within a city, town,
or other local area, including adjoining towns and suburban areas.
AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS (SIC 4212 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking or transfer of
agricultural products, with or without storage, within a city, town, or other
local area, including adjoining towns and suburban areas.

operations are principally outside a single municipality, outside one group of

areas. Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing air courier services for
individually addressed letters, parcels, and packages generally weighing less
than 100 pounds are classified in Industry 4513 and other courier services for
individually addressed letters, parcels, and packages generally weighing less

HOUSEHOLD GOODS MOVING (SIC 4213 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking, with or without
storage, of furniture and other household goods. Such operations are
principally outside a single municipality, outside one group of contiguous
municipalities, or outside a single municipality and its suburban areas.
GENERAL FREIGHT (SIC 4213 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking, with or without
storage, of general merchandise. Such operations are principally outside a

Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing both trucking and storage
services, including household goods, within a single municipality, contiguous

primarily engaged in furnishing warehousing and storage of household goods
when not combined with trucking are classified in Industry 4226.
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing local courier services for
letters, parcels, and packages weighing less than 100 pounds are classified in
Industry 4215.

Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking and storage of
furniture and other household goods within a city, town, or other local area,
including adjoining towns and suburban areas.
OTHER LOCAL TRUCKING WITH STORAGE (SIC 4214 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing trucking and storage services,
not elsewhere classified, within a city, town, or other local area, including
adjoining suburban areas.
COURIER SERVICES, EXCEPT BY AIR (SIC 4215)
Establishments primarily engaged in the delivery of individually addressed
letters, parcels, and packages (generally under 100 pounds), except by means
of air transportation or by the United States Postal Service. Delivery is
usually made by street or highway within a local area or between cities.
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing air delivery of individually
addressed letters, parcels, and packages, except by the United States Postal
Service, are classified in Industry 4513, and establishments of the United
States Postal Service are classified in Industry 4311. Establishments
primarily engaged in the delivery of advertising and other unaddressed
letters, parcels, and packages are classified in Industry 7319.
Establishments primarily engaged in undertaking the transportation of goods
from shippers to receivers for a charge covering the entire transportation,
but making use of other transportation establishments to effect the entire
delivery are classified in Industry 4731. Establishments primarily engaged in
furnishing armored car services are classified in Services, Industry 7381.
LOCAL COURIER SERVICES (SIC 4215 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in the delivery of individually addressed
letters, parcels, or packages (generally under 100 pounds) within a city,
town, or other local area, including adjoining towns and suburban areas.
Delivery is made by street or highway within the local area and by other than
the U.S. Postal Service.
COURIER SERVICES, EXCEPT LOCAL (SIC 4215 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing delivery of individually
addressed letters, parcels and packages (generally under 100 pounds) by truck
or other land vehicle, except locally or by the U.S. Postal Service.
PUBLIC WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE (SIC 422)
Establishments primarily engaged in farm products warehousing and storage,
refrigerated warehousing and storage, general warehousing and storage, and
special warehousing and storage, not elsewhere classified.
FARM PRODUCT WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE (SIC 4221)
Establishments primarily engaged in the warehousing and storage of farm
products. Establishments primarily engaged in refrigerated warehousing are
classified in Industry 4222.
REFRIGERATED WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE (SIC 4222)
Establishments primarily engaged in the warehousing and storage of
perishable goods under refrigeration. The establishment may also rent locker
space for the storage of food products for individual households and provide
incidental services for processing, preparing, or packaging such food for
storage.
GENERAL WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE (SIC 4225)
Establishments primarily engaged in the warehousing and storage of a general
line of goods. The warehousing of goods at foreign trade zones is classified
in Industry 4226. Field warehousing is classified in Services, Industry 7389.
GENERAL GOODS WAREHOUSING (SIC 4225 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in warehousing and storage of a general line
of goods for the public.
Note: General merchandise is defined as materials or goods of many varieties
which are packaged or are readily handled and do not require refrigeration,
controlled humidity, or other special facilities.
SELF-SERVICE OR MINIWAREHOUSING (SIC 4225 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in self-service storage and miniwarehousing.
SPECIAL WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE, N.E.C. (SIC 4226)
Establishments primarily engaged in the warehousing and storage of special
products, not elsewhere classified, such as household goods, automobiles
(dead storage only), furs (for the trade), textiles, whiskey, and goods at
foreign trade zones. Warehouses primarily engaged in blending wines are
classified in Wholesale Trade, Industry 5182.
HOUSEHOLD GOODS WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE (SIC 4226 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in the storage of furniture and other
household goods.

SPECIAL WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE, N.E.C. (SIC 4226 pt.)
Establishments primarily engaged in the warehousing and storage of special
products, not elsewhere classified, such as furs, petroleum products,
chemicals, automobiles (dead storage only), textiles, whiskey, and goods at
foreign trade zones.
TRUCKING TERMINAL FACILITIES (SIC 423)
Terminal and joint terminal maintenance facilities for motor freight
transportation (SIC 4231).
Establishments primarily engaged in the operation of terminal facilities used
by highway-type property carrying vehicles. Also included are terminals
which provide maintenance and service for motor vehicles. Terminals
operated by motor freight transportation companies for their own use are
classified in Industry Group 421. Separate maintenance and service facilities
operated by motor freight transportation companies are classified as
auxiliary. Establishments primarily engaged in the repair of trucks are
classified in Services, Industry Group 753.
WATER TRANSPORTATION (SIC MAJOR GROUP 44)
This group includes establishments engaged in freight and passenger
transportation on the open seas or inland waters, and establishments
furnishing such incidental services as lighterage, towing, and canal
operation. This major group also includes excursion boats, sightseeing boats,
and water taxis. Cargo handling operations when carried on by transportation
companies and separately reported are classified in Industry 4491. When
separate reports for cargo handling are not available, these operations are
classified with the transportation establishment. Establishments engaged in
the operation of charter or party fishing boats are classified in Services,
Industry 7999.
WATER TRANSPORTATION OF FREIGHT
Establishments primarily engaged in operating vessels for the deep sea
transportation of foreign and domestic freight.
DEEP SEA FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC FREIGHT (SIC 441,2)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating vessels for transportation of
freight on the deep seas between the mainland United States ports, ports of
noncontiguous territories, foreign ports, the Panama Canal Zone, Puerto Rico,
and United States island possessions or protectorates.
DEEP SEA FOREIGN TRANSPORTATION OF FREIGHT (SIC 4412)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating vessels for the transportation
of freight on the deep seas between the United States and foreign ports.
Establishments operating vessels for the transportation of freight which
travel to foreign ports and also to noncontiguous territories are classified
in this industry.

DEEP SEA DOMESTIC TRANSPORTATION OF FREIGHT (SIC 4424)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating vessels for the transportation
of freight on the deep seas between ports of the United States, the Panama
Canal Zone, Puerto Rico, and United States island possessions or
protectorates. Also included are operations limited to the coasts of Alaska,
Hawaii, or Puerto Rico. Establishments performing transportation of freight
on the intracoastal waterways paralleling the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are
classified in Industry 4449.

OTHER WATER TRANSPORTATION OF FREIGHT (SIC 443,4)
Establishments primarily engaged in transportation of freight on the Great
Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway or on all inland waterways, including the
intracoastal waterways on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION ON THE GREAT LAKES--ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY (SIC 4432)
Establishments primarily engaged in the transportation of freight on the Great
Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway, either between United States ports or
between United States and Canadian ports.

WATER TRANSPORTATION OF FREIGHT, N.E.C. (SIC 4449)
Establishments primarily engaged in the transportation of freight on all
inland waterways, including the intracoastal waterways on the Atlantic and
Gulf coasts. Transportation of freight on the Great Lakes and the St.
Lawrence Seaway is classified in Industry 4432. Establishments primarily
engaged in providing lighterage and towing or tugboat services are classified
in Industry Group 449.
WATER TRANSPORTATION OF PASSENGERS (SIC 448)
Establishments primarily engaged in either operating ferries or other vessel
for water transportation of passengers.
FERRIES (SIC 4482)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating ferries for the transportation
of passengers or vehicles. Establishments primarily engaged in providing
lighterage services are classified in Industry 4499.
WATER TRANSPORTATION OF PASSENGERS, EXCEPT BY FERRY (SIC 4481,9)
Establishments primarily engaged in either operating vessels on the deep seas
or airboats, excursion boat operations, or sightseeing boats for
transportation of passengers.
DEEP SEA TRANSPORTATION OF PASSENGERS, EXCEPT BY FERRY (SIC 4481)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating vessels for the transportation
of passengers on the deep seas.
WATER TRANSPORTATION OF PASSENGERS, N.E.C. (SIC 4489)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing water transportation of
passengers, not elsewhere classified, such as airboats (swamp buggy rides),
excursion boat operations, and sightseeing boats.
SERVICES INCIDENTAL TO WATER TRANSPORTATION (SIC 449)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing services incidental to water
transportation such as marinas, marine cargo handling, towing and tugboat
services.
MARINAS (SIC 4493)
Establishments primarily engaged in operating marinas. These establishments
rent boat slips and store boats, and generally perform a range of other
services including cleaning and incidental boat repair. They frequently sell
food, fuel, and fishing supplies, and may sell boats. Establishments
primarily engaged in building or repairing boats and ships are classified in
Manufacturing, Industry Group 373. Establishments primarily engaged in the
operation of charter or party fishing boats or rental of small recreational
boats are classified in Services, Industry 7999.
OTHER SERVICES INCIDENTAL TO WATER TRANSPORTATION (SIC 4491,2,9)
Establishments primarily engaged in furnishing services associated with water
transportation such as marine cargo handling, towing and tugboat services,
and commercial vessel rental or lease, boat cleaning, canal operating and so
on.
MARINE CARGO HANDLING (SIC 4491)
Establishments primarily engaged in activities directly related to marine
