Interagency Working Group on Plant
Genomes Workshop: "Genome to Farms, Laboratories to Classrooms"
Organizers:
Rob Last, National Science Foundation, rlast@nsf.gov
Ed Kaleikau, US Department of Agriculture, ekaleikau@csrees.usda.gov
Anne Sylvester, University of Wyoming, annesyl@uwyo.edu
Overview of Workshop:
Plant genomics research activities in the U.S. are leading to an
impressive array of innovations and scientific discovery. In addition
to furthering our understanding of plant science, this research is
directly benefiting plant breeders, growers, and biotechnologists.
Plant genomics is at the cutting edge of 21st century science, yet
involves plants that everyone knows about because they make our food,
clothing, shelter, medicine, energy, and industrial raw materials. As a
result, this research creates wonderful subject matter for science
education at all levels.
This workshop will highlight several of many examples of how plant
genomics researchers are using their research projects for outreach to
growers and breeders, teachers, and students. It will also highlight
web resources that are available to the worldwide community. We hope to
stimulate discussion that will lead to new outreach activities and
broaden the network of individuals participating in and benefiting from
this exciting science.
The Interagency Working Group (IWG) consists of representatives from
the Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, National
Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, US Agency for International
Development, Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the Office of
Management and Budget. The IWG is charged with identifying
science-based priorities for a national plant genome initiative and to
plan and coordinate plant genome research activities for the United
States.
