| Abstract: | This edited volume focuses on the linguistic aspects of the Spanish used in the United States today. The earliest studies in this field concentrated on rural Mexican-American Spanish in the Southwest. The parameters of the field have been extended in response to changing urban and demographic realities, and to paradigm shifts in linguistics itself. Growing numbers of linguists are interested in the intricate and complex issues relating language to society, education, ethnicity, the media, and politics. Research has also been expanding to include the study of the multiple subgroups that make up the more varied and complex Hispanic population. Chapter titles include the following: "Linguistic Heterogeneity, Civil Strife, and Per Capita Gross National Product in Inter-polity Perspective" (Joshua A.
