APS booster test is a beam come true

The entry in the Advanced Photon Source's Accelerator Systems Division log book is short and simple: "7-GeV electron beam in the booster, 1930 hours, January 22, 1995."

What that entry means is neither short nor simple. The APS booster reached its designed operating level of 7 billion electron-volts (7 GeV) at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, and with that accomplishment, the construction of the nation's most powerful X-ray machine reached a major milestone on its way to full-scale operations later this year.

"Turning on the world's brightest X-ray source is a wonderful way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wilhelm Roentgen's discovery of X-rays," noted David Moncton, Associate Laboratory Director for the APS.

"The APS booster now works as designed. After all the hard work by so many people, it certainly makes us very happy that things worked as smoothly as they did. Now we're ready to go on to the next step," said Steve Milton, manager of the booster ring.

That next step involves delivering the 7-GeV particle beam into the storage ring to generate X-rays. "The storage ring injection system worked flawlessly at 4 GeV, and I expect the same performance at 7 GeV," Milton said.

The national user facility is expected to attract 2,000 scientists annually when research begins in 1996. The new X-ray technology will allow industrial, academic and national laboratory-based experimenters to perform both basic and applied research. Expected commercial developments include new materials, medicines and other products with direct potential for the marketplace.

Formal dedication of the APS is planned for 1996, as part of Argonne's 50th anniversary celebration.

Next `Topics' to focus on Galvin Report

Argonne Director Alan Schriesheim and Joseph Asbury, deputy to the laboratory director, will discuss "The Galvin Report -- What It Means to Argonne," from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 3, in the Building 362 auditorium.

The Galvin Report is the product of a 23-member task force established by Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary to examine options for change in DOE's 10 major laboratories, especially alternatives for using their scientific and engineering resources to meet national needs. The task force is chaired by Robert W. Galvin, chairman of the Executive Committee, Motorola Inc., Schaumburg.

Among the alternatives the task force was asked to address are redirection, restructuring and closure of elements of the DOE laboratory system. Its draft report will be presented to the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board Feb. 1 in Washington. Lab employees and others will have two weeks to comment on the draft report.

For more information on this Argonne Topics presentation, call Jill Morgenthaler (OPA) at ext. 2-2725.

Chamber music concert tickets now available

Tickets for a Feb. 5 performance by the Prazak String Quartet will be sold in the Building 213 cafeteria lobby during the week of Jan. 30, from noon to 1 p.m.

Tickets are $15. The concert begins at 3 p.m. in the Building 362 auditorium.

Upcoming performers in Arts at Argonne's 1994-95 chamber music series are Igor Kipnis, harpsichord and piano, on March 12; and Trio di Milano, piano, violin and cello, on April 22.

    New service provides assistance
    in medical emergencies outside U.S.

A new service can help Argonne employees if a medical emergency occurs during travel outside the United States.

Argonne has contracted with MEDEX, a network of more than 25,000 health-care providers including doctors, hospitals, clinics, air ambulance companies and others. MEDEX can help put employees in touch with local providers who can assist with the problem and coordinate care. The network also can assist with translation difficulties, legal referrals and emergency fund transfers.

MEDEX is a voluntary program and contacting the network is the employee's decision. MEDEX does not pay medical bills; that remains the responsibility of the employee's medical insurance company or HMO.

Employees who make overseas travel arrangements through the Argonne Travel Department will receive a MEDEX identification card and brochure in their travel packet.

A representative from MEDEX Assistance Corporation will give a short presentation on this new service at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the Building 203 auditorium. Following the presentation, a representative from Argonne's Safeguards and Security Department will give a brief talk on safety and security issues when traveling overseas.

For more information, call the Travel Department at 2-3407 or Employee Benefits at 2-2993.

`Fling' features country music, dance lessons

A "Country Western Fling" sponsored by Argonne Club rides into the Building 213 cafeteria on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Two dance floors will be available for line dancing, two-steps, the cowboy boogie, and that city-slicker invention, the "electric slide." One floor will be reserved for beginners and one for advanced dancers, and line dancing instruction will be offered for the tenderfoot. Music will be provided by country western DJs.

A chuckwagon dinner and cash bar will be available. Cost is $4 per person at the door.

    Diabetes, heart screening offered

Argonne's Preventive Health and Wellness Program will offer heart disease and diabetes screening Feb. 9, as well as a series of informational seminars during the month of February.

The 15-minute complete diabetes and coronary risk profile assessment screening is voluntary, and all results are confidential. Cost is $20. To make an appointment, contact the Medical Department, Building 201, by Feb. 3.

Seminars are free and open to all Argonne employees. They will be held in the Building 212 auditorium from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Topics are:

    * Friday, Feb. 17: Coronary risk assessment results seminar

    * Tuesday, Feb. 21: "Low Fat, Low-Sugar, High-Fiber Nutrition"

    * Wednesday, Feb. 22: Diabetes results seminar

    * Thursday, Feb. 23: "Exercise Your Heart"

    * Friday, Feb. 24: "Health Under Stress"

    * Tuesday, Feb. 28: "Clinical Applications of Cardiovascular Disease"

Individual consultations are available at no charge with a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist and the Argonne psychologist. Follow-up wellness programs include smoking cessation and weight, fitness, and stress management.

    Library survey seeks employee comments

Beginning Monday, Jan. 30, Argonne employees can comment on the laboratory's library services by participating in a library user satisfaction survey.

The survey will be available in the ten Argonne libraries, both on paper and on-line via the Argonne Information Management (AIM) system terminals. The survey will also be posted on the Information and Publishing Division's World Wide Web home page (http://www.ipd.anl.gov/libsurvey.html).

The survey is part of the work of Argonne's Ad Hoc Library Review Committee, established in 1994 and charged with studying the effectiveness of the present library system and making recommendations to laboratory management about future directions for library services. The Ad Hoc Committee comprises representatives from the laboratory's research areas.

"We want to find out how well the current library system is serving Argonne," said Chris Reilly, Environmental Research Division director and chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee. "We hope to get a large response from the Argonne staff, who depend on having a good library system to help them do their work."

Survey responses will be collected through Feb. 10.

`Acrobat' to perform at PC Club meeting

Jim Pope and Larry Sanders of Adobe Systems, Inc. will be the featured speakers at the Argonne Personal Computer Club Meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, in Building 221, room A216.

The meeting topic will be Version 2 of Adobe Acrobat. Acrobat converts files to a common data format called PDF. PDF files created on one platform, such as Macintosh, can be viewed on a different platforms such as MS-DOS or UNIX.

Acrobat includes a set of readers for various platforms that allow users to view PDF files.
